How China Spies
A new book shows that China uses private intel mercenaries. If true, this would be the outsourcing of intelligence gathering.
— Read on www.19fortyfive.com/2022/11/how-china-spies/China’s Espionage: Methods and Goals
My experiences prompted me to read Chinese Espionage: Operations and Tactics by the pioneering Nicholas Eftimiades. The author does yeoman’s work and offers the free world an important service by painstakingly combing through publicly available information on how the PRC operates its vast foreign intelligence apparatus. He creates a monograph that every U.S. business professional and member of Congress should read – as should any person concerned about free markets and fair competition. I read it in one evening. It is only 56 pages, but that is more than enough. Eftimiades is trying to sound an alarm, not win a Man Booker Prize.
Analyzing 595 cases over a 10-year period, and using disparate data including U.S. Department of Justice filings, asset control briefs, import/export applications, and foreign government information, Eftimiades presents a compelling narrative of just how pervasive PRC intelligence is, what are its global goals, and how it has already co-opted private industry to advance its agenda.

China just announced a new social credit law. Here’s what it means.
While local governments have been much more ambitious with their innovative regulations, causing more controversies and public pushback, the countrywide social credit system will still take a long time to materialize. And China is now closer than ever to defining what that system will look like. On November 14, several top government agencies collectively released a draft law on the Establishment of the Social Credit System, the first attempt to systematically codify past experiments on social credit and, theoretically, guide future implementation.

Elderly suicide rates mar Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s ‘victory’ over rural poverty
Back in Anhui, L wanted to know why rural communities have always had to shoulder the burden of political, social and economic change in China.
“My grandfather had high blood pressure and had to take various medications for diseases of the elderly,” L said. “It cost 800-900 yuan a month, adding up to around 10,000 yuan a year.”
“That cost was astronomical for him, an old man living alone in the countryside.”
“Ever since the [People’s Republic of China] was founded in 1949, it has always been the rural areas and farming communities who have made the biggest sacrifices, including through the [post-1979] economic reforms,” L said.
“They have always had inadequate education, medical care and pensions … This is a huge segment of the population, and yet [those in power] can’t tell that they are suffering, or they don’t know why?”
“Haven’t they suffered enough?”

Chinese cities double down on zero-COVID as outbreaks widen
“I don’t know what to do. If we can still survive living like this then I suppose that’s what we’ll do,” said a Wuhan resident surnamed Chang, 38.
“When we see these news stories about COVID, we now feel a bit numb. We feel numb to it all. We feel more and more numb.”
Wuhan also suspended the sale of pork in parts of the city, according to images and posts on social media, after one COVID case was found that authorities said was linked to the local pork supply chain.

Hu Jintao’s Exit Highlights ‘Ruthless’ China Leadership
“Xinhuanet reporter Liu Jiawen has learned that Hu Jintao insisted on attending the closing session of the Party’s 20th National Congress, despite the fact that he has been taking time to recuperate recently,” the Twitter channel China Xinhau News tweeted on October 22.
It followed this up with another tweet that read: “When he was not feeling well during the session, his staff, for his health, accompanied him to a room next to the meeting venue for a rest. Now, he is much better.”
However, the video footage of the moment appears to show Hu initially resist being hoisted up by one individual before another comes in to assist.
