China’s Espionage: Methods and Goals
My experiences prompted me to readChinese Espionage: Operations and Tacticsby the pioneering Nicholas Eftimiades. The author does yeoman’s work and offers the free world an important service by painstakingly combing through publicly available information on how the PRC operates its vast foreign intelligence apparatus. He creates a monograph that every U.S. business professional and member of Congress should read – as should any person concerned about free markets and fair competition. I read it in one evening. It is only 56 pages, but that is more than enough. Eftimiades is trying to sound an alarm, not win a Man Booker Prize.
Analyzing 595 cases over a 10-year period, and using disparate data including U.S. Department of Justice filings, asset control briefs, import/export applications, and foreign government information, Eftimiades presents a compelling narrative of just how pervasive PRC intelligence is, what are its global goals, and how it has already co-opted private industry to advance its agenda.
Back in Anhui, L wanted to know why rural communities have always had to shoulder the burden of political, social and economic change in China.
“My grandfather had high blood pressure and had to take various medications for diseases of the elderly,” L said. “It cost 800-900 yuan a month, adding up to around 10,000 yuan a year.”

Saturday’s evening news in China featured images of Hu attending the session but none of him being removed.
On China’s Twitter-like Weibo, a few social media users discussed the incident but by the evening, the comments section of almost all Weibo posts containing Hu’s name were no longer visible, according to a Reuters review.
State and party groups across China, meanwhile, promoted the Congress energetically in their online postings, highlighting praise for Xi and the outcome of the party’s deliberations.
Hashtags for state media congress coverage dominated the top of Weibo’s viral topics list.
