The World Health Organisation has said China has not given a full account of how many of its 1.4 billion population succumbed to the disease after it abruptly abandoned strict COVID curbs in December last year.
China said around 80,000 people died from COVID in hospitals across the country in the first two months after curbs were lifted, a period where funeral parlours said they were inundated and long lines of hearses queued outside crematoriums.
Some epidemiologists at the time estimated as many as 2 million people may die from the virus in China.
The province’s data, which did not state the cause of death, has since been taken down. Data for the fourth quarter was also not available. China’s ministry of civil affairs, which collates death statistics, has not published nationwide cremation data covering that period.
Both the Zhejiang provincial government and the ministry of civil affairs did not respond to requests for comment.
During the first three years since late 2019 when the pandemic broke out, China had kept the virus largely in check by adopting a strict “zero-COVID” policy of harsh lockdowns and mass testing.
But towards the end of 2022, the policy started failing as the highly transmissible Omicron variant spread rampantly and local governments struggled to cough up money and manpower to enforce the curbs.
China abruptly changed tack in December 2022 after protests in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities against the curbs.
In January, a government scientist estimated that 80% of China’s 1.4 billion people had become infected.

There were 171,000 cremations registered in the eastern province of Zhejiang in the first quarter, well above the 99,000 in the same period in year before, Chinese financial media outlet Caixin reported, citing official data released by the province. The official statement was later removed from the internet, according to Caixin.
[…] However, that number was widely seen as an underestimate because the government narrowed the criteria for classifying deaths caused by Covid-19 late last year. An estimate in January by Zuo-Feng Zhang, chair of the department of epidemiology at the Fielding School of Public Health at University of California, Los Angeles, put the number of deaths at about 900,000 in those five weeks.
[…] Although Zhejiang province deleted the first quarter data from its website, Caixin cited an unnamed local government official as saying that “some” of the deleted data was accurate and that cremations increased mainly because of the coronavirus. [Source]

Cremations in the Chinese province of Zhejiang rose more than 70% year-on-year in the first quarter, government data showed, an unexplained jump that occurred as a COVID outbreak swept the country.
About 171,000 cremations were registered in Zhejiang – home to around 5% of China’s population – in the first three months of 2023, up from 99,000 in the same period last year, according to data on the province’s civil affairs bureau website.

As an international body, the WHO should, in theory, be apolitical. According to its constitution, its primary objective is “the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health.” Since China has no legitimate authority to govern Taiwan, it is in no position to determine Taiwan’s public health policies, epidemic prevention measures, scientific research, or related matters.
From a public health perspective, it is essential for Taiwan to be accepted into the WHA. In a globalized world where diseases can spread instantly via international travels, exclusion of Taiwan or any other regions is a clear and present danger to the entirety of humanity. This was clearly demonstrated during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Taiwan CDC was the earliest governmental entity to alert the WHO about a novel infectious disease emerging from Wuhan, China, on Dec. 31, 2019. If the WHO had followed up on the warning, the world would have had extra invaluable weeks to prepare.

In early 2020, the initial COVID outbreak devastated the city of Wuhan, home to 11 million residents, in central China’s Hubei province. Under a 76-day lockdown, its streets were deserted for months, apart from ambulances and security personnel.
At that time, a small number of citizen journalists tried to tell their stories and those of others with smart phones and social media accounts, defying the Communist Party’s tightly policed monopoly on information. Although their movement was small, the scale was unprecedented in any previous major disease outbreak or disaster in China.

The origins of the COVID pandemic have been hotly debated. From the very beginning, the news media and their allies in Big Tech censored many legitimate questions and concerns. But three years later, the evidence clearly points in the very direction that was censored.
The former Director of National Intelligence, John Ratcliffe, told a House committee Tuesday that a leak of COVID-19 from a laboratory in Wuhan, China is the only credible explanation for the pandemic that killed millions of people worldwide.
“My informed assessment as a person with as much access as anyone to our government’s intelligence during the initial year of the pandemic has been and continues to be that a lab leak is the only explanation credibly supported by our intelligence, by science, and by common sense,” Ratcliffe told the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Sandstorms have led to air quality warnings being issued in China. Large areas in the north have been blanketed with sand carried by the wind from Mongolia. Yellow dust from the storms also reached Japan and South Korea, causing haze and poor visibility. China’s air quality has improved in recent years, due to the stricter environmental regulations on factories. But sandstorms are a common spring-time occurrence for Beijing because of its proximity to the Gobi desert and deforestation in the north of the country.

At least 409 million people in China have been affected by a severe sandstorm. The dust, which stretches over 2.2 million square kilometres, has affected 15 provinces and regions, including capital Beijing in the north and the Shanghai financial hub in the south. This is the eighth round of what Chinese officials have described as “dusty weather” this year — up from five to six times during the same period in other years.
